Frequently Asked Questions

Why is meal service so important to our clients?

The vast majority of our clients need food security--that is, nutritious and regularly prepared fresh meals to maintain their health.  Our service is of particular importance to the growing number of our clients who are living in hotels with little or no kitchen facilities.

What kind of volunteers do you need?

Special Delivery needs volunteers to work in the kitchen and deliver meals.

How much time should I volunteer?

Most of our kitchen staff members volunteer for one shift a week--about two or three hours.  Our drivers usually deliver one route per week which normally takes about one hour.

How can my organization help Special Delivery?

Many organizations have adopted a route and provide a driver once a week to deliver meals.  Other organizations have raised funds or collected non-perishable food items that are donated to Special Delivery.

How often do you deliver meals?

Special Delivery delivers meals once a day Monday through Friday.  Each delivery includes a cold breakfast, a cold lunch and a hot evening meal.  In addition to these meals, on Tuesdays a one-half gallon of 2% milk is delivered to each client and on Fridays our volunteers deliver a shopping basket of groceries for weekend use.

Who is eligible to receive meal service?

Anyone is eligible who has a life-threatening illness and/or needs emergency nutrition due to financial needs. Individuals who want home-delivered meals need to reside in our service area.

     Where do you deliver meals?

Special Delivery delivers meals within about a seven-mile radius of headquarters including downtown, Hillcrest, Bankers Hill, North and South Park, University Heights, Normal Heights, Kensington, Talmadge and City Heights.

How can I make a financial contribution to Special Delivery?

You may send a check to Special Delivery at 4021 Goldfinch Street, San Diego, CA  92103 or, if you prefer, make a contribution online through PayPal on the Donations page.  Special Delivery is a 501(c)(3) organization and your contribution may be tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
