Special Delivery
drivers pick up meals for delivery Monday through Friday at our
headquarters at 4021 Goldfinch between 3 pm and 5 pm. Drivers serve as our
primary contact with our clients and, as a consequence, see most directly
how much of a difference our meal service can make to the people we serve.
All routes are located
in San Diego within about a seven-mile radius of our
headquarters. Most of the routes have about 15 clients with only
about 10 delivery stops since often a group of clients live at the same
address. Deliveries normally take about one hour.
Volunteers provide
their own transportation, and our experience is that meals can easily fit
into even a compact car. Any licensed driver with proof of auto
insurance can deliver meals.

Regular Drivers:
Our greatest
volunteer need, and probably our most rewarding volunteer opportunity, is
for people who can adopt a route one day a week. Our drivers see
first-hand how much our service is appreciated and often serve as one of
the most important personal contacts our clients have on a regular
basis. Because our drivers provide such an important service, we
need volunteers who can commit on a regular basis. If once a week
is too frequent, you might consider teaming up with a friend with whom
you can alternate weeks. We also welcome school groups and civic
organizations that can adopt a route and provide a driver each week.

Alternate Drivers:
If your schedule does
not permit a commitment on a regular basis, or if you would like to try out
deliveries before you adopt a route, you might consider serving as an
alternate driver who can fill in for a regular driver. If you
volunteer to fill in on an "as needed basis," we will normally
telephone you at the beginning of the week to let you know the days when we
need replacement drivers. We do our best to schedule as long as four
weeks in advance. This makes it easier for our alternate drivers to
plan their schedules. Sometimes, however, because of unexpected
events, we need to find drivers at the last moment. That's when we
really appreciate volunteers who are able to drive on less than a few hours
notice.
